“It’ll Turn An Ordinary Outing Into A Party”: Our Lifestyle Editor Trials The Bag Of The Moment

"It veers from fancy to fun."

Travel, parties, feasting on delicacies, arming yourself with beautiful things just for the thrill of it: all of it is back. Each delight is returning to our grasp in the form of Weekend Max Mara’s Pasticcino clutch reboot.

This year, as part of a cross-season project, the delicious snack of a bag begins its world tour; dressing for each destination in the crafts of the region – like royalty.

Touching down in Venice for the first in a series of numbered special editions, the oversized coin purse pays homage to the “lagoon city” in pastels and golds spun into renaissance patterns. These romantic, old-world flourishes are courtesy of Mariano Fortuny –  one of the world’s finest fabric houses – while the glass sphere clasp is handmade in Murano, the tiny Venetian Lagoon island famous for glass-making.

Like all good world tour fashion moments, Pasticcino proves its worth as a working member of the Weekend Max Mara family by fusing local talent with its own signature style.

Named after the Italian word for small pastry, the Pasticcino Bag debuted in 2016 and soon became emblematic of special occasions and high-fashion fun.

Wear it over the shoulder using the chain strap, tuck it under the arm, or clutch it with the hand on route to dinner, the theatre or other fabulous excursions.

Pasticcino won’t fit your laptop or “go with everything” – it wouldn’t be sullied by such concerns – but it will turn an ordinary outing into a party. As Nicola Gerber Maramotti, ambassador of the Weekend Max Mara Venezia Pasticcino Bag project, tells it, the clutch is delightfully decadent. “Pasticcino has a ‘once upon a time’ allure. It veers from fancy to fun, from an easy piece to run around with to a more important, statement-making accessory,” she says.

Venezia is the first in a series of special editions of Pasticcino, which will salute the arts and crafts of the global destinations it graces. “Its world tour connects artisans and Weekend Max Mara,” Maramotti explains.

Wherever the bag goes next, one thing’s for sure: we’re going to enjoy the ride.
