There’s no denying that many famous celebrity couples are now steering away from traditional baby names and opting for a more unique approach. Take newborns True, Hart and Stormi, for example. An added bonus of being born the child of a Hollywood A-lister, perhaps? Here, we investigate the reasoning behind some of the most unusual celebrity baby names.

Miles Theodore Stephens 

Parents: John Legend and Chrissy Teigen 

Meaning: John Legend revealed that every name him and wife Chrissy Teigen give to their children has musical meaning and significance. “We named our first daughter Luna Simone Stephens; every name we give to our kids I think will have a little bit of musical history to it,” he told E! NewsSo Miles is, of course, is the same name as the great Miles Davis.” He also added that Chrissy was a big fan of the name “Theodore” hence Miles’ second name.

Hart Spiegel

Parents: Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr 

Meaning: Miranda Kerr and husband Evan Spiegel welcomed their first son together, Hart, on 7th May 2018. He is named after the Snapchat CEO’s grandfather, Hunter Spiegel, a prominent San Francisco lawyer. According to Nameberry, Hart is a boy’s name of English origin meaning “stag”. The website notes it is often brought up as one of the best unique boy’s names due to it being short, straightforward, and strong sounding.

Parents: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West 

Meaning: It’s pretty safe to say that Kimye raised a few eyebrows when they announced that the name of their first-born daughter was North. Kardashian told British GQ that North means highest power and Kim says that North is the couple’s “highest point together.”

Rumi and Sir Carter 

Parents: Jay Z and Beyonce

Meaning: The music power couple welcomed twin boys in June 2017 and their name selection was a little unusual. Jay Z clarified the confusion on the podcast Rap Radare in August 2017, explaining the meanings behind the bizarre name choices. “Rumi is our favourite poet, so it was for our daughter. Sir was like, man, come out the gate. He carries himself like that. He just came out, like, Sir.”

True Thompson 

Parents: Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian 

Meaning: Shortly after Khloe announced her daughter’s name on Instagram, Kris Jenner also took to the popular social media platform to share a fun fact behind the meaning of her new granddaughter’s name. “I’m so excited to welcome my precious little granddaughter True!!! FUN FACT… my Grandfather’s name on my Dad’s side was True Otis Houghton….my Dad’s name was Robert True Houghton…so I am so excited Khloe named her daughter True!!!” Also, True is an English baby name that means Loyal. Interesting choice.

Apple Martin 

Parents: Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow 

Meaning:  According to Access Hollywood, Chris Martin’s North American booking agent, Marty Diamond, has a daughter named Apple. The couple asked his permission to give their child the same first name if they had a girl. The baby’s middle names, Blythe and Alison, are the names of Paltrow’s and Martin’s mothers, respectively.

Bear Payne 

Parents: Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole 

Meaning: The former One Direction member and the X Factor judge welcomed their first son, Bear, in March 2017. It was certainly a unique choice by the couple, especially when you pair it with Liam’s last name. The ‘Strip That Down’ singer revealed that Cheryl was responsible for the peculiar name choice. “I wanted a more traditional name and she wanted a name that was more unusual,” he said. “And the reason she chose Bear in the end was because Bear is a name that when you leave a room, you won’t forget. And I like that.” Liam also appears to be a Bear Grylls fan and described the survivalist as “a boss” on Twitter after the birth. Interesting.

Parents: David Beckham and Victoria Beckham 

Meaning: Posh and Becks are certainly no strangers to extravagant measures that concern their children. After all, Victoria has trademarked the names of all four children. Their inspiration for their third son’s name, Cruz, comes from no other than Tom Cruise himself. The famous soccer player also told Grant Wahl that Cruz was given his name as he was delivered in Madrid, as it means ‘cross’ in Spanish. ‘I must admit, when we met Tom, I remember turning around to Victoria and saying, “Cruise is a great name, but we could spell it different” ‘And also, living in Spain [at the time], Cruz is spelt the way it is in Spanish. So that’s why we got it.’

Parents: Travis Scott and Kylie Jenner 

Meaning: The meaning behind this unique celebrity baby name isn’t as complex as you would think. In fact, it’s quite simple. In a sit-down interview for the Evening Standard, Kylie told older sister Kim Kardashian West “I really don’t know how we thought of Storm,” “Her dad insisted it was him, but I feel like it was me.” “I didn’t really like just Storm – I didn’t feel like that was her name,” she continued, “So then it became Stormi. And it just stuck.”

Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder 

Parents: Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed 

Meaning: Ian Somerhalder and his wife Nikki Reed welcomed their first daughter together Bodhi Soleil on July 25, 2017. The name derives from the Sanskrit word for “enlightenment” and the French word for “sun.” The Vampire Diaries actor and the Twilight actress aren’t the first celeb couple to use the name, either: Megan Fox gave birth to her son Bodhi Ransom Green in 2014.
