One aspect of royal life we’re not sure Meghan Markle would be pleased about is the rule that she can’t express any political views.
Meghan has been a badass feminist since age 11 – something the royal family surprisingly highlighted in her official royal bio – and has spoken publically numerous times about her beliefs regarding women’s rights and gender equality.
But now that she’s a Duchess, speaking out on political matters is a big no-no, something Meghan may have done while chatting with an Irish politician overnight.
The Irish Times reports Senator Catherine Noone tweeted about having a conversation with Meghan about the country’s referendum to repeal a ban on abortion.
“The Duchess and I had a chat about the recent referendum result — she watched with interest and was pleased to see the result,” Noone wrote in a now-deleted tweet.
Noone quickly followed up with a separate tweet after many pointed out royals are not allowed to take political stances. “I should say she seemed pleased — she was interested and very measured, not political at all,” she wrote.
Of course, if Meghan did say she was pleased about abortion being legalised, it wouldn’t be surprising. The Duchess has been vocal about her views even after her engagement to Prince Harry.
Speaking at the inaugural Royal Foundation Forum, her first event alongside the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan said: “You’ll often hear people say, ‘well, you’re helping women find their voices’. I fundamentally disagree with that because women don’t need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it and people need to be encouraged to listen.”
“And I think right now, with Me Too and Time’s Up, there’s no better time to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people really helping to support them.”
