Meghan Markle And Prince Harry’s Children Will Not Have Same Name As The Royal Family

Here's what it will be

While we hate the pressure people put on newlywed couples to have children, we think it’s pretty safe to say that kids will be on the cards for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (and they’ve spoken about it themselves) in the not-too-distant future.

While most kids tend to take the name of their parents, usually their mother or fathers family name, it’s not quite so simple in the royal family. So begs the questions, what name will Meghan and Harry’s kids take?

First things first, we know Markle is definitely out, as Meghan dropped that name when she married Harry (although like Kate Middleton, it’s not looking like its going anywhere soon).

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

According to the official royal website:

The Royal Family name of Windsor was confirmed by The Queen after her accession in 1952. However, in 1960, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be distinguished from the rest of the Royal Family (without changing the name of the Royal House), as Windsor is the surname used by all the male and unmarried female descendants of George V. It was therefore declared in the Privy Council that The Queen’s descendants, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince/Princess, or female descendants who marry, would carry the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.

So while the royal family’s last name is technically Mountbatten-Windsor, the name game gets decidedly more confusing from there.

Growing up, Prince William and Harry actually used the surname ‘Wales’, as their father, Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales. So they used their territorial title, instead of their surname.

Then, when William welcomed his first child, Prince George with wife Kate, they decided to follow suit and use the name Cambridge. So when George was registered at school last year, he went under the name George Cambridge – Charlotte and Louis will do the same.

After their marriage on May 19, Harry and Meghan were given the titles The Duke and Duchess of Sussex by the Queen, so if this is anything to go by, then it seems that Harry and Meghan’s offspring will likely go by the name Sussex.

Diana Sussex has a nice ring to it, hey?
