A U.K. Tabloid’s Negative Headline About Meghan Markle’s Pregnancy Is Causing Controversy

Its headline read: "Publicity-Shy Woman Tells 7.67 BN People: I'm Pregnant."

On Valentine’s Day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were expecting their second child, and while the response was largely positive, it didn’t take long for U.K. tabloids to prove exactly why the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the decision to exit the royal family and relocate to California.

Harry and Meghan’s announcement, which came via a spokesperson, did not contain any details about the pregnancy, and instead read simply: “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”

The pair chose to release a new portrait alongside the happy news, taken by longtime friend and photographer Misan Harriman, and while the usual response to such an image is “Congratulations!” one British tabloid, the Daily Star, covered the news with a different approach.

Unsurprisingly, the headline quickly caused backlash online, with criticism ranging from the tabloid proving why the couple chooses to remain hidden away to the clear misogynistic undertones. Other pointed out that Meghan, as a former actress, has never been publicity-shy, but rather grown tired for the press after facing attacks—such as this one—since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry in 2017.
