Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement, we’ve been ready and waiting for the bride-to-be to step out donning a princess-worthy tiara.
But according to royal protocol, we won’t see Meghan wearing one anytime before her wedding to Prince Harry on May 19th. Why? Because only married women are allowed to wear tiaras.
There’s a chance the 36-year-old could take after her soon to be sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, and wear the royal headwear on her wedding day, though tiaras are usually reserved for nighttime occasions.
“Flashy diamonds and tiaras are not worn during the day, and only married ladies wear tiaras,” etiquette expert Grant Harold told BBC.
“For married ladies, it was a sign of status and would show you were taken and not looking for a husband.”
Though it’s against custom in the Britsh royal family to wear a tiara before marriage, Meghan has already done so: when she was crowned homecoming queen.
