Brisbane Men Jailed For Raping 20-Year-Old Woman In Alleyway

"No woman should ever walk the streets in fear"

Two men who raped a 20-year-old medical student—who was a virgin at the time— in an alleyway in Brisbane will spend at least four years and three months behind bars.

As ABC News reports, Ryan David George, 33, and Jack Scott Turner Winship, 26, were sentenced in Brisbane District Court on Wednesday after a jury found them guilty.

The court heard the men led the 20-year-old into a West End laneway and raped and sexually assaulted her for at least eight minutes in April 2011.

The duo then went to a nearby pub and said they had “gotten lucky”.

“They saw her drunk, vulnerable, and manoeuvred her into an alleyway… for the purposes of having illicit sexual intercourse with her,” Crown Prosecutor Dzenita Balic told the court.

In a victim impact statement, the woman wrote of the traumatic attack: “There was pain. Searing to the core.”

“It is impossible to summarise the complete impact of this crime on my life,” she continued in the statement.

“I cannot sleep and when I do I wake up minutes or hours later. I sincerely hope I’m through the worst but history can’t be erased.”

According to Nine News, Winship had told the court the woman had consented and had passionately kissed him, claiming “she was enjoying herself”.

The Brisbane District Court jury found Winship and George guilty of three counts of rape and sexual assault after a week-long trial.

The pair are eligible for parole in July 2022.
