This Year’s Met Gala Theme Is Already Causing Controversy

It's certainly unexpected

The countdown to the 2018 Met Gala is on – and by all reports, it’s going to be quite the religious experience.

According to the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, next year’s theme is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. Make of that what you will, but we envisage a whole lot of culturally inappropriate outfits (with a dash of sartorial genius courtesy of Rihanna of course).

As a semi-explainer, the museum’s curator, Andrew Bolton, told the New York Times, “the focus is on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology.” This year’s exhibition will also reportedly include garments on loan from the Sistine Chapel, some of which have never been seen outside of the Vatican.

Considering the state of the Catholic Church these days, there’s no doubt the theme is going to attract some controversy, which Bolton himself acknowledges.

“We know it could be controversial for right wing or conservative Catholics and for liberal Catholics,” Bolton told the Times.

One thing we can get behind though is the trio of ladies hosting the event – Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace. Finally, Rihanna is getting the credit she deserves for out-dressing everyone else every year. Amen to that!
