Celebrities Are Sharing What They Would Have Worn To The 2020 Met Gala

Katy Perry was going to pay tribute to Madonna (through the iconic cone bra)

The 2020 Met Gala would have taken place on Monday, May 4, but like many other events, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Costume Institute’s decision to postpone the annual ball is sure to have left guests, fashion insiders and devoted followers of the annual spectacle disappointed.

But, that doesn’t mean some of our red carpet favourites aren’t sharing a glimpse of what would have been. Julia Roberts and Katy Perry are among some of the stars who are celebrating staying in – in couture, of course.

Julia Roberts

While we don’t know if this is the exact gown Roberts had planned to wear to the 2020 Met Gala, she’s still celebrating the first Monday in May. The 52-year-old actress posted a pic from inside her bathroom wearing a gorgeous black and white gown.

“Here’s me…not going to the Met Ball tonight. #stayhome #yesyoustillhavetostayhome,” she captioned the shot, which also sees her toasting to the night in instead of out.

Roberts co-chaired the Met Gala in 2008 alongside longtime friend George Clooney. She wore an Armani Prive gown and walked the red carpet with Giorgio Armani at the event.

Katy Perry

For what would have been this year’s Met Gala, Perry was planning on paying tribute to Madonna’s iconic cone bra. Perry, who is engaged to Orlando Bloom, was even planning on making her growing baby bump a feature of the look!

what would have been… #TheMetBall2020💔“, the singer captioned a photo of her outfit.

Despite the cancellation, High Fashion Twitter, an online space shared by fashion enthusiasts far and wide, hosted a virtual gathering on May 4. Guests were encouraged to compete in a series of categories in relation to this year’s intended theme, ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’, which include the following: ‘Photoset Creation’, ‘Brand Challenge’, ‘Wardrobe Styling’ and ‘Illustration Expression’.
