Michelle Obama is “beyond thrilled” to congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for their Presidential Election win in the United States.
On November 8, the former First Lady paid tribute to their election victory with a lengthy letter on Twitter where she shared some powerful, inspiring and hopeful words for the future.
Expressing her excitement over the incoming Biden and Harris’ administration, Obama also cautioned Democrats that the fight to fix America is far from over, especially since Donald Trump‘s continued supporters proves that there is still work to be done.
Without naming Trump directly, she wrote that the President-elect and Vice President-elect would “restore some dignity” to the White House where she then characterised Trump’s current administration as one of “lies, hate, chaos, and division.”
“I’m beyond thrilled that my friend @JoeBiden and our first Black and Indian-American woman Vice President, @Kamala Harris, are headed to restore some dignity, competence, and heart at the White House,” she began. “Our country sorely needs it.”
But she wasn’t done there, she went on to make it clear there is still so much work to be done.
Obama urged the Democrats, who voted in the election, to not become complacent and ease up on the fight for change that began once Trump’s term started back in 2016.
In a powerful tweet, she wrote: “The path to progress will always be uphill. We’ll always have to scrape and crawl up toward that mountaintop. And two years from now, four years from now, there will once again be no margin for error.”
Obama then took on a more pressing angle, mentioning the two senate runoffs in Georgia, that are likely decide which party controls Congress. The runoffs could also greatly influence future President Biden’s ability to govern. And while yes, this Presidential Election is over, the election season is far from it.
Former President Barack Obama also took to Twitter, sharing a statement praising Biden, his former vice president, and thanking all the volunteers and organisers who helped turn out the record-breaking numbers of votes in the 2020 election.
As Michelle Obama noted, Biden and Harris’ historic win is cause for celebration, but she reminds us that it is just the “first step” in the right direction and that winning an election will not magically solve their problems.
“We’ve got to promise each other that our focus in this election won’t be an anomaly, but the rule,” she explained. “That’s how we can not only feel this way right now, but in the months and years ahead.”
