To many, beauty pageants are controversial events. But this week’s Miss Teen USA sparked even more drama than usual.

The national televised beauty pageant’s finale was scheduled for Saturday night, and in the lead-up, the organisers behind Miss Teen USA tweeted the following post.

Can you spot the problem?

Social media users – including a few famous names – were quick to point out the lack of diversity.

Unfortunately, the controversy only got worse, when it was discovered that the winner of the pageant, Karlie Hay, had previously used the ‘N-word’ on her personal Twitter.

Today, she took to the social media platform again to apologise. “Several years ago, I had many personal struggles and found myself in a place that is not representative of who I am as a person. I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for.”

Pageant organisers have said that she will keep her crown.
