6 Places To Shop For Modest Clothing

Modest clothing is one of the fastest growing sectors of the fashion industry

As the world becomes more aware and the internet breaks down walls between countries and cultures, there’s never been more awareness around modest clothing. Made for women who — for whatever reason, be it religious or just personal preference — want to cover up, modest clothing has been a somewhat sheltered industry, at least when it came to big international fashion cities and runway shows. Now, designers are tapping more and more into the appeal of a modest outfit and catering to customers with diverse needs — and the numbers prove it.

According to WWD, modest clothing has expanded beyond traditionally Muslim-majority countries, with a 15 per cent increase in interest for modest clothing in the West. Noting the take-off of the #MeToo movement, plus religious observance and current trends (which have seen high necks and long skirts become mainstream), searches for modest clothing retailers are at an all time high in the United States, according to the publication.

Now, mammoth online luxury stores like Net-A-Porter are getting in on the traction, dedicating an entire section to modest clothing. Featuring all manner of international brands, the clothing filter is a go-to for women who are looking to cover up. Likewise, with the rise of influencers like Somali woman Rawdah Mohamed (who lives in Norway), hijabs and traditionally modest clothing are making their way into the fashionable street style set. And with news of top model Halima Aden’s upcoming headscarf collaboration with Modansia, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Progress, although it might be slow, is definitely happening. Below, we’ve rounded up five places to shop for modest clothing — because inclusivity doesn’t stop at size.

The Modist

Stocking an impressive cache of designer clothes and accessories, The Modist is exactly what you expect from a luxury online department store. The only difference is that everything fits a modest mould. From Emilia Wickstead to Ellery, the designers are as wide ranging as they are impressive, with a covetable selection of modest dresses, coats and shoes.

Dian Pelangi

Founded by husband and wife team Djamaloedin and Hernanl, Dian Pelangi is now run by their daughter, an influencer of the same name. Credited as one of the most influential women in fashion, Pelangi has been listed on the Business Of Fashion’s BoF 500 and boasts 4.9 million followers on Instagram. Known for her colourful prints and quirky designs, Dian Pelangi is one of Asia’s most successful modest retailers, hands down.

Batsheva

Founded by New York City-based designer Batsheva Hay, the brand has become a favourite amongst fashion girls and celebrities thanks to its prairie-style designs and pretty colour palettes. Hay, an orthodox Jew, doesn’t design exclusively modest, but her pieces have become staples for in-the-know women wanting to cover up.

Rico Rinaldi

Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, designer Rico Rinaldi knows how to make pretty-as-a-picture pieces. From everyday clothing to couture-like gowns, his namesake label has become a go-to for modest women across the world.

Diana Kotb

Founded by former Australian magazine editor, Diana Kotb, this eponymous label is all about producing elegant pieces that are made to last. From wedding dresses to souped-up blazers, Kotb’s collections are each as exquisite as the last.

Verona Collection

This UK-based affordable modest brand has just been picked up by ASOS, meaning their chic takes on everyday items — including stylish hijabs — will be available en masse. And with their cult favourite hijabs selling out regularly, we’re hoping the ASOS deal means more, more more!
