This year’s scores for the most influential accounts on Twitter have been released and we have to say, the results are a pretty accurate insight into the year that was. Digital consumer intelligence company, Brandwatch, have compiled the results for the fourth year in a row, ranking 50 of the most significant accounts on the social media platform. The unique algorithm takes into consideration genuine engagement, number of followers, retweets, replies and the influence of the account’s followers to determine their score.

“This is our measure of how influential an account is over time, based on the level of genuine engagement they are creating,” Brandwatch says of its algorithm.

“While lots of followers, retweets and replies will help, the more influential the people they engage with, the better the score.”

Taylor Swift came out on top for the second year in a row with a score of 97 – and accounting for one of almost 30 musicians who made the top 50. This wasn’t the first time this year that popstars influence has been recongised. Back in April, she was featured in TIMES’s 100 Most Influential People in the World list – being hailed an “icon” by the outlet.

Following closely behind her was President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narena Modi, making a strong case for the power and influence of social media in modern day politics. Other celebrities in the top ten included regulars Katy Perry, Elon Musk, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lady Gaga, Ellen DeGeneres, Ariana Grande and Kim Kardashian, whose scores all ranged between 95-96.
