This week marks an exciting and sad occasion in one for the fashion world – Jean Paul Gaultier has decided to celebrate his 50-year anniversary as a fashion designer by retiring.

During those 50 years, Gaultier has shaken up the fashion industry in the best way, bringing creativity, controversy, theatrics and stunning designs down the runway. These are some of his most iconic moments throughout his career.

The Conical Bustier 

Madonna may have made them famous in 1990 but Jean Paul Gaultier dreamed up his conical garment when he was a young boy. His teddy bear was actually the first to wear them! Throughout his career, Gaultier featured the cone bra in many of his designs.

Gaultier has always had an affinity for sailor stripes and nautical references.

The Man-Skirt

In 1984, Gaultier sent men down the runway in skirts. “A man doesn’t wear his masculinity on his clothes. His virility is in his head,” Gaultier said of his unconventional statement. The man-skirt became another of his iconic signatures.

The designer had a fascination with corsetry and lingerie and helped make it acceptable to wear underwear in public. Bondage influences were also present in his designs.

Diversity On The Runway

Gaultier is one of the pioneers for diversity on the runway. In the 1980s he placed an ad in the French Liberation daily seeking “Atypical models. The facially disfigured should not refrain from applying”. Beth Ditto, Conchita Wurst and Farida Khelfa are some of the most memorable models to walk the Jean Paul Gaultier runway.
