This Is The Most Shameful Part Of Today’s #LibSpill

“A reminder to all that really important issues are falling by the wayside”

While we’re all talking about Malcolm Turnbull stepping down from the Liberal party and Scott Morrison becoming Australia’s new Prime Minister (our sixth in 11 years), we’re not talking about the important issues.

Because the Government adjourned parliament early today, the House was unable to consider and pass legislation that would stop domestic violence victims being directly cross-examined by their abusers.

As well as not passing the important domestic violence reform bill, the upcoming Women’s Safety Ministers’ meeting was cancelled because of the leadership crisis, as MP Linda Burney pointed out on Twitter earlier today.

While our politicians are playing pass the parcel with the leadership, they’re not doing their job. And they’re letting us all down.

In a country where 41 women have been killed by violence already this year, surely the safety of women should be our number one priority.

Instead of selfishly jostling for the top job, our politicians should be doing what they were elected to do: governing the country.

As Greens leader Richard Di Natale said in an impassioned speech in the Senate yesterday, “You should be ashamed of yourselves.”
