As if Anne Hathaway’s fashion slam dunks of late weren’t enough to remind us why she’s an icon of our time, her latest film, Mother’s Instinct is gifting us with more style wins—this time, with a 60s twist.
Hathaway was recently pictured shooting scenes for the upcoming movie in New Jersey—a far cry from last week’s style-spectacle in Cannes. But this time, she sported a voluminous hairstyle, a short sleeve fitted blue midi dress, cat eye sunglasses and a bright red lip—she transported us from the South of France straight to 60s suburbia within the space of a day and we’re here for it.
Of course, Hathaway isn’t the only major Hollywood star to grace the set. Oscar winner Jessica Chastain will also star in the psychological thriller, having gifted us with glimpses of her own 60s-esque costuming.
But while the look and feel of the film is giving vibrancy, flair, and a happy go-lucky narrative, the storyline is actually far darker.

What is Mothers Instinct about?
Mother’s Instinct is a psychological thriller feature film about two best friends and neighbors Alice (played by Chastain) and Celine (played by Hathaway) living in the 1960s. On the surface, they appear to be living the ultimate white picket fence life heavily glamorised in that era—they both have beautiful houses, successful husbands and sweet children.
But their lives come crashing down when tragedy strikes, and a suspenseful whodunit-style mystery unravels Alice and Celine’s friendship.
The film is based on a novel originally written in French, Derrière la Haine by Barbara Abel. A 2018 Belgian film adaptation, Duelles, received widespread acclaim, and now, the films director Olivier Masset-Depasse has teamed up with writer Sarah Conradt to produce an English language version.
Who is in the cast of Mother’s Instinct?
Chastain and Hathaway are currently the only stars who’ve been confirmed to star in the film, although we can expect more casting announcements in the coming weeks as filming gets underway.
The two acclaimed actors will also produce the film alongside director Olivier Masset-Depasse, who was also director on the 2018 Belgian version.
When will Mother’s Instinct be released?
No specific date for Mother’s Instinct has been set, but given filming is now well underway, it’s likely the film will drop at the end of the year, or in early 2023. We’ll update this article as more information comes to light.
