30 Celebrities Join Forces To Read Letter By Immigrant Mother Separated From Her Child

This is heartbreaking

As the fallout from the Trump administration’s ‘zero tolerance’ border control policy continues, 30 Hollywood heavyweights have banded together to bring a letter written by one of the detained immigrant mothers separated from her child to life.

Created by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig, Emma Thompson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus to name a few, the video features a statement by a Honduran woman identified only as Mirian, whose 18-month-old son was taken away from her at the Texas border in February.

“I brought my son to the United States so that we could seek protection from violence in Honduras,” the letter reads. “We fled Honduras after the military tear-gassed our home.”

Mirian details exactly how she and her son were separated: “I did not even have the chance to comfort my son because the officers slammed the door shut as soon as he was in the seat,” she writes.

“I need to be able to hold him and reassure him that he is safe and that his mother is here for him.”

As she describes her experience in an American detention facility, she says, “I was going crazy wondering what had happened to my son.”

Thankfully, for Mirian at least, the nightmare is over. An immigration judge ruled in April that she had a credible asylum claim, CNN reports, and she was reunited with her son a month later.

According to the Huffington Post, Mirian is part of a class-action lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the Trump administration’s border policy.
