Netflix’s ‘The Duchess’ Is Being Billed As ‘Gilmore Girls’ Meets ‘Fleabag’ And You’re Going To Love It

Add this to your must-watch list, you can thank us later

If you’ve binge-watched The Crown and are desperately searching for your next royals hit, Netflix’s The Duchess isn’t going to scratch that itch—despite the title. Instead, the series will focus on a not-so-royal Katherine, comedian Katherine Ryan, that is.

For anyone who has ever watched Katherine Ryan’s stand-up comedy, you will know that the Canadian comedian is one of the funniest women on the entire planet.

With no joke too controversial, she never shies away from what it’s really like to be a woman in the twenty-first century from the realities of parenting to the horror of dating—and her Netflix series is said to be all that good stuff and more.

Intrigued? Keep reading for everything you need to know about the show, from the plot to the cast and where you can stream it in Australia.

What Is The Plot Of The Duchess?

The six-episode series follows Katherine, a melodramatic single mother in London with an over-the-top sense of style and a fear of commitment, and most importantly, a daughter named Olive.

Katherine must decide whether she should have a second child with her ex-boyfriend, who’s an unreliable washed-up boy band member. The only problem? She can’t stand him, leading to some very awkward, yet hilarious, run-ins.

According to Ryan, the series is loosely based on her own life experiences. The Duchess is super authentic I think to my personality, to my stage persona, because it’s a disruptive mum who’s a bad person but a good mum. She’s fashionable, she loves being a mother she’s not sad about it—it’s me, yes” she admitted to RadioTimes.com.

“The rest is fiction, but it is a heightened version of me, and I’m really lucky because they’re just letting me go and write the real thing that I would have wanted to, and I don’t think I would have been as lucky with a traditional network, I don’t think they would give me the same liberty that Netflix does. It’s gonna be fun.”
