Netflix’s ‘Unbelievable’ Mini Series Is Inspired By A True Rape Story That Nobody Believed Happened

And it’s out now

“Even with people you can trust, if the truth is inconvenient, they don’t believe it,” says Marie, one of the main characters from Netflix’s new eight-part limited series Unbelievable.

She’s referring to her rape, which police – and even those closest to her – don’t believe happened, and ultimately end up convincing her to admit she lied so she can avoid facing jail time.

The worst part? Marie’s character (played by Booksmart actress Kaitlyn Dever) is based on a true story about a real case that happened in Lynnwood, Washington, in 2008.

Unbelievable is a close television adaptation of a 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning article called ‘An Unbelievable Story of Rape’, which was written by journalists T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong for American investigative site ProPublica about a rape case involving a teenager.

The TV series, Unbelievable, begins with Marie’s story of being raped, reporting it, being made to say she lied about the whole thing, and having to live a lonely life clouded with public shame as a result.

The next part of the story follows two detective in Denver, Colorado – Grace Rasmussen played by Toni Collette and Karen Duvall played by Merrit Weaver – who are investigating similar rape attacks three years later that eventually lead them to Marie’s case.

Now, we’ll just leave it at that because we don’t want to spoil too much for you, especially since the series is out now on Netflix and we highly recommend watching it ASAP, but we will say you should definitely make time to read the article about the real case afterward. It’s compelling, upsetting, and sadly all true.

“Even with people you can trust, if the truth is inconvenient, they don’t believe it,” says Marie, one of the main characters from Netflix’s new eight-part limited series Unbelievable.
