Get Ready, ‘Never Have I Ever’ Has Officially Been Renewed For A Second Season

High-schooler Devi Vishwakumar is back!

It looks like we’re finally getting an answer to Never Have I Ever’s Team Paxton versus Team Ben cliffhanger, with Mindy Kaling’s coming-of-age Netflix series officially getting renewed for a second season.

The series, starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as high-school student Devi Vishwakumar, and co-created by Kaling and Lang Fisher, has officially been renewed, with stars Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet, Lee Rodriguez, and Ramona Young all returning.

Never Have I Ever follows Devi, a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl, grappling with some painfully relatable teenage experiences, as well as dealing with the sudden death of her father.

Kaling previously told TVLine that both she and Fisher drew from their own experiences when writing Devi’s story.

“We both lost parents, and we were like, ‘It would be so great to, in a show that’s a comedy show, be able to deal with a character who is unable to handle her grief,” she said. “Especially in a lot of Asian communities and minority communities, dealing with grief, or mental health, there’s still such a stigma attached to it.”

See the cast react to the exciting news below:

Earlier this year, Ramakrishnan told Variety what she thought was in store for the second season.

“Three main things — understanding that she needs to be more appreciative of her family and her friends because her friends do a lot for her… and also understanding where her mother’s coming from,” she said. “Then also the idea of approaching that grief — confronting it, having that battle, even though it’s something uncomfortable to think about.”

She also hopes Devi learns to embrace her culture, “Because that is so important in a world where identity is everything.”
