Although it may seem like managing and despairing for the future of your ‘challenging’ offspring brings no benefit and only exuberant amounts of worry, we have some new information that might just make it all worthwhile.

A new study, published in Developmental Psychology, has discovered that outspoken children – in other words, defiant – will go on to enjoy a successful and ‘rich’ life. Yes, you read that correctly.

The 40 year-long study “was designed to examine how student characteristics and behaviours in late childhood predict career success in adulthood,” according to the researchers who pioneered the project.

The study began by collecting data from children at age 12, taking into consideration factors such as family circumstances and status, their intelligence, and performance and behaviour at school. Researchers then examined the same 745 participants at age 52, comparing the original data to their occupational success and income.

The results indicated a very clear correlation between the “influences of student characteristics (responsible student, rule-breaking and defiance of parental authority)… on career success.”

In layman’s terms, your child’s ‘rebellious’ behaviour, strong personality and willingness to not conform and push the boundaries will result in a more successful adulthood and higher income.

So, the next time you find yourself negotiating with your rule-breaking, strong-willed child, just remember that the yelling, threats, bribes and tears will be all worth it in the end.

It might cost you your sanity, but what else are parents for, right?
