12 Of The Best New Year's Eve Movies Of All Time

Like all holidays in 2020, New Year's Eve may look a tad different this year. But while our usual celebrations to ring in the new year may have changed, the tradition of snuggling up at home to watch a classic film spanned across the holiday period is one we'll never waver from.

And now that 2021 is in sight, it's time to pop the bubbles, get comfy on the couch and watch the New Year's movies that leave us all warm and fuzzy inside—sparkly outfit, optional.

Below, 12 of our favourite New Year's Eve movies to say bon voyage to the year that was.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

While also on the list of the greatest romantic comedies ever made, When Harry Met Sally features one of the most iconic New Year's Even scenes in cinematic history (which you'll have to watch to see for yourself).

Carol (2015)

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara team up for this Oscar-nominated romantic film, following two women from completely different worlds who fall in love in the 1950s. Their first kiss happens on New Year's Eve—because there's truly no moment more romantic than when the clock strikes midnight.

About Time (2013)

While sometimes we wish we could do the whole year over when New Year's comes too quickly, 2020 isn't one of them. In this film, starring Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams, a man with the ability to time travel tries to change his past in hopes of improving his future.

New Year's Eve (2011)

This Gary Marshall directed comedy features a star-studded lineup, including Michelle Pfieffer, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher, Sarah Jessica Parker and more. It follows several characters from different walks of life, who get their lives intertwined when they embark on a quest to find happiness on New Year's Eve.

Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)

Truly a classic, this iconic movie starts and ends on New Year's, with Renée Zellweger at her most charming. It'll forever beg the question, can we truly start the year with a clean slate? Or, a blank diary for that matter.

Waiting To Exhale

With the combined talents of Whitney Houston and Angela Basset, this movie—coming full circle on New Year's—follows four women navigating through careers, family and romance.

The Holiday (2006)

Nancy Meyers' The Holiday will always land on our favourite movies of all-time list. It follows Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two women who unexpectedly find love where they least expect it—which comes to an end in that New Year's Eve scene.

Sex And The City: The Movie (2008)

The snow! The music! The fashion! Sex and the City's New Year's Eve montage on the series' big-screen debut proves exactly why Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha have been firm fixtures on our screens for decades—proving the holiday isn't always about romantic love, it's about friendship too.

Money Train (1995)

What's not to love about a Jennifer Lopez '90s film? Money Train isn't exactly what you'd expect from a New Year's movie, but it's twist-and-turns make for a fun watch.

Rent (2005)

On top of its legendary musical numbers, Rent takes place between Christmas and New Year's and genuinely captures the hope that a new year might bring to anyone—exactly what we need going into 2021.

200 Cigarettes (1999)

Featuring Paul Rudd, Ben Affleck, and Kate Hudson, 200 Cigarettes is about "a collection of twenty-somethings trying to cope with relationships, loneliness, desire, and their individual neuroses", coupled with the uncertainty of the future at the turn of the new year.

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Okay, technically Eat Pray Love has nothing to do with New Year's, but there's something about Julia Roberts running off to Europe to find herself—while indulging in amazing food and falling in love—that sounds exactly what we need going into the new year.
