In a decisive move signalling a new era for the monarchy, King Charles has formally stripped Prince Andrew of his royal titles and honours, effectively erasing his public identity as a prince.
Buckingham Palace confirmed overnight that the King had issued formal orders for his younger brother to surrender all remaining royal privileges, including his lease on Royal Lodge, the 30-room Windsor estate he has called home since 2003.
The decision, years in the making, follows sustained pressure over Andrew’s long-standing association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,” the Palace announced in a statement, noting that the move was taken despite Andrew’s continued denials of wrongdoing.
The statement added that “Their Majesties’ wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
The repercussions extend beyond Andrew. His former wife, Sarah Ferguson, is also being affected by the King’s new measures. Earlier this month, when Andrew relinquished the use of his royal titles, Ferguson quietly ceased using her own title as Duchess of York. Now, as Andrew vacates Royal Lodge, she too must leave the estate.
The couple, who divorced in 1996 but have continued to live together, had been leasing the property from the Crown Estate. It was recently revealed, however, that Andrew had not paid rent for more than two decades, despite holding a lease that extended to 2078.
“Formal notice has today been served to surrender the lease,” Buckingham Palace confirmed.
Andrew is expected to relocate to a smaller property on the private Sandringham Estate, which will be funded privately by the King. Ferguson, meanwhile, will make her own living arrangements.
Though they officially divorced more than 30 years ago, Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have continued sharing a home at Royal Lodge in Windsor since 2008, an arrangement that has long raised eyebrows. Ferguson has often defended their unusual cohabitation, saying that “the York family are a united front.”
The revocation of Andrew’s titles — including Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh — takes immediate effect. He will no longer be referred to as “His Royal Highness” and has also been stripped of his Order of the Garter and Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. His daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their royal titles.
The family of Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her as a teenager and died by suicide earlier this year, released a statement following the King’s announcement.
“Virginia was an ordinary American girl who brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage,” said her brother, Skye Roberts. “Today, she declares victory.”
The move marks one of the most severe internal censures in modern royal history. The last time a British royal was stripped of a princely title was in 1917, when King George V removed those who sided with Germany during World War I.
For King Charles, the decision underscores a deliberate effort to distance the monarchy from scandal and restore a sense of institutional integrity.
Without titles, income, or a formal residence, Andrew and Sarah Ferguson now face life on the periphery of the royal family, a fall from grace that feels both inevitable and complete.
