Manus Island Detention Centre To Close

The Manus Island detention centre will close it has been announced. The decision came Immigration Minister Peter Dutton met with Papua New Guineaโ€™s Prime Minister Peter Oโ€™Neill today.

The fate of the 854 men currently being held in the detention centre remains unclear, as does the time frame for the facilityโ€™s closure.

In a statement Prime Minister Oโ€™Neill said โ€œBoth Papua New Guinea and Australia are in agreement that the centre is to be closed.โ€


In April the PNG Supreme Court ruled that detention centre was โ€œillegal and unconstitutionalโ€.
