Every Single Street Style Trend You Need To Know From NYFW

Bucket hats, blue...

Fashion week is a funny concept, when you really think about it. For a week — or month, in February and September’s case — we watch with eagle eyes as designers parade their new season looks down the runways, most of which can only be seen by the editors who attend their shows. Now, thanks to the accessibility of the internet and the rise of the blogger, fashion shows are easier to access than ever. But as we’ve come to learn, sometimes the biggest trends are created off the runway and outside on the street.

As street style becomes perhaps even bigger than runway shows, fashion girls are turning to their favourite well-dressed women for sartorial inspiration — instead of the models inside. Often a great way to gauge which designer trends are actually, well, wearable, what happens on the street is oftentimes more of an indication of what will do well commercially; and, in turn, what we’ll all be wearing. So it only makes sense we have our eye trained firmly on the street set all through fashion week.

Women on the street in New York are famously known for their anything-goes approach to dressing. Whether it’s touting a new colour (New York women virtually cemented neon as a trend in 2018) or proving they can pull off anything (hello, bucket hats) the Manhattan set are some of the best in the business. For autumn/winter ‘19/’20, this meant pastels, tie dye and paring it back — among others. Below, we’ve rounded up the trends to know as we move into autumn, because there’s absolutely no shame in copying your favourite influencer’s spot-on outfit. We won’t tell!

Leather coats

Matrix sunglasses might have ruled in 2018, but this season it’s all about the futuristic leather coat. Giving us serious 90s vibes, a longline leather trench can instantly dress up a simple outfit — a la Phoebe Philo. For extra points, try it in a coffee brown.

Pastel blue

Move over pink, there’s a new pretty shade in town. Pastel blue was seen in spades on the street, with fans of the hue trying it out in everything from bubble jackets to blazers.

Tie dye

Cementing their hold on the city and its fashion set, New York-based Eckhaus Latta’s tie dye roots were everywhere this season. Whether they were wearing the brand or not, the influence of the hippie dippie prints was unmistakable among the street set, who wore it in every form.

Less is more

Call it in the @oldceline effect, but street goers are moving away from Gucci’s maximalist hold and towards a cleaner, fresh future. Paring back colour and print, this trend takes into account simple shapes in luxury fabrics. Like normcore, but for rich Parisian women.

White out

Not exactly new, but nevertheless a trend we’re enjoying. Whether it was via fluffy coats or a boilersuit, the street set didn’t hold back in pairing white-on-white. That rule about not wearing white after Labor day? Well and truly dead.

Bucket hats

Blame Prada, but bucket hats are here to stay. After being rampant on the Scandi street set, it seems the mini hat has infiltrated the chic heads of New York women, too. Wear yours with a souped-up coat or long dress to ensure you still look like an adult!
