Olivia Colman may be giving up the throne after season four of the hit Netflix show The Crown, but it’s certainly not for a lesser cause.

In perfect casting news, it’s been revealed that Colman will be teaming up with a royally good cast to star in the upcoming Elena Ferrante adaptation The Lost Daughter. The Oscar-winning actress will appear alongside Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl) and Peter Sarsgaard (Jackie) in the star-studded film.
The film marks Maggie Gyllenhaal’s first directing and writing credit, the actress sharing in a statement that;
“When I finished reading Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter, I felt that something secret and true had been said out loud. And I was both disturbed and comforted by that.”

“I immediately thought how much more intense the experience would be in a movie theatre, with other people around. And I set to work on this adaptation.”
The book follows the story of college professor Leda (Colman), who while on a seaside holiday in Southern Italy, becomes besotted with Nina (Johnson) and her young daughter. Nina’s presence reminds Leda of her own challenges as a young mother, and the narrative quickly takes a dark turn – becoming a psychological thriller revolving around Leda’s own mind.

Alongside Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren will co-produce the movie under the auspices of their production company, Pie Films.
The debutant is clearly enamoured by the impressive cast and crew set to work on the film. “I find that the script has attracted other people interested in exploring these secret truths about motherhood, sexuality, femininity, desire. And I’m thrilled to continue my collaboration with such brave and exciting actors and filmmakers.”
Could The Lost Daughter be the female-directed film that breaks the Oscars dry spell? Time will tell.
