Oprah’s Favourite Facialist Shares The Best Thing You Can Do For Your Skin

And her Michelle Obama-approved remedy for getting your glow back

You may not know Jennifer Brodeur’s name, but you definitely know her clients: Oprah, Michelle Obama and Ashley Graham, to drop a few. Known as the ‘skin guru’ in the kinds of circles Oprah and Ms Obama frequent, Brodeur flew into Sydney straight from the Golden Globes to speak at the Dermaviduals International Symposium.

While here, she spoke to marie claire about the best – and worst – things you can do for your skin, and gave a glimpse into what it’s like to work on Oprah’s famous face: “I need her to leave that chair and say, ‘honey-child, I look amazing.’”

On the cardinal rules of cleansing:

“Cleansing your skin is the most important part of your skincare routine. The skin will often get more tired and dull if it accumulates pollution and make-up, so if you’re able to cleanse your skin every night, it’s like a fresh start.”

The significance of sleep:

“Apart from cleansing, the best thing you can do for your skin is sleep. It’s free, it’s when your body rehydrates and recharges. When you lack sleep, your vital organs eat first, your skin eats last and then you become stressed and the stress hormones come out and wreak havoc on your skin. And then you want comfort food, so then you eat bad food, and so it goes on.”

The biggest skincare mistake women make:

“So many women over-exfoliate and peel. With everything that you can do at home now, it’s crazy. Everybody’s skin is different, but generally you should exfoliate between once a week and once a month. The thicker your skin, the oiler your skin is, the more you’re going to exfoliate. The drier your skin is, the less you exfoliate.”

The product she loves:

“The one thing that I love people to invest in is the Smart Profile Clarisonic Brush. I’m obsessed. I kid you not, every VIP I work with, it’s the first thing we get them. You can use it once every two weeks, or when you have lots of make-up on, you can use it for a double cleanse. It creates its own exfoliation so you can stay away from all those scrubs and stuff.”

The secret to glowing skin:

“I’m a huge believer in vitamins, anti-oxidants specifically, like vitamin C. Vitamin c is an anti-inflammatory, it brightens the skin and it helps with collagen production. I think what women should be doing everyday is incorporating something vitamin-based in their skincare regime. Vitamin c gives that glowing effect to the skin more than anything.”
