Of the many questionable behaviours from the institution of the royal family and revelations that were revealed in Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, one moment has become particularly picked over. During the CBS special, Meghan revealed that prior to Archie’s birth, conversations involved a member of the royal family occurred that were concerned about the colour of his skin.
Meghan explained that during the discussions around what title and protection their as-yet-unborn baby would receive, some members of the family expressed “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” Oprah’s shocked response has already become a meme, but the rampant racism and colourism, while quite disgusting, is not a surprise.
Which royal was concerned about Archie’s skin colour?
During the interview, Meghan and Harry declined to identify which royal family member made the comments. “I think that would be very damaging to them,” said Meghan.
Many speculated that it was the Queen’s husband Prince Philip who was concerned about Archie’s skin colour, however, those rumours have now been put to rest.
During an appearance on CBS This Morning, Oprah confirmed to host Gayle King that neither the Queen nor Prince Philip made those comments. Gayle pointed out the “big guessing game all around the world—who was it, who was it, who was it?” while adding that she, “thought it was very touching that Harry is still choosing to protect the identity of whoever that was.”
“He did not share the identity with me, but he wanted to make sure that I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother nor his grandfather [who] were a part of those conversations,” clarified Oprah.
“Neither his grandmother nor grandfather were a part of those conversations,” she confirmed for the record, adding that he still did not tell her the identity of who it was.
During the interview, Harry did reveal that for a period of time, his father Prince Charles stopped taking his calls.
