The 93rd Annual Academy Awards are done for another year, and as we tuned in for the (in person!) red carpet—which ICYMI didn’t disappoint on the glamour—it was the incredible lineup of nominees that secured the night as one for the history books.
It wasn’t even halfway through the ceremony when Chloé Zhao became not only the second woman (behind director Kathryn Bigelow for her work on the 2009 film The Hurt Locker), but the first woman of colour to take home the Best Director award for her work on Nomadlad.
“When I was growing up in China, my dad and I would play this game,” she said during her acceptance speech. “We would memorise classic poems and text and try to finish each other’s sentences… I have always found goodness in the people I met” adding, “this is for anyone who has the faith and courage to hold onto the goodness in themselves.”
Emerald Fennell, who was alongside Zhao in the Best Director category, became the first woman to win Best Original Screenplay in 13 years for her work on Promising Young Woman.
Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson became the first Black women to win an Academy Award for makeup and hairstyling for their work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
“I want to say thank you to our ancestors who put the work in, [and] were denied but never gave up,” Neal told the crowd. “I also stand here, as Jamika and I break this glass ceiling with so much excitement for the future because I can picture Black trans women standing up here. And Asian sisters. And our Latina sisters. And Indigenous women. And I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking. It will just be normal.”
Ann Roth was also on the list of history-makers, becoming the oldest woman ever to win an Oscar, at the age of 89 for her work in costume design on Viola Davis’ Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Finally, actress Yuh-Jung Youn became the first Korean woman to win in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Minari, also arguably winning tonight for the best standout moment following her acceptance speech directed toward presenter Brad Pitt.
