A North Carolina man has been charged with murder after he allegedly woke up from a dream and found his wife stabbed to death in their bedroom.
As PEOPLE reports, Matthew Phelps called police on Friday morning claiming that his wife, Lauren Phelps, was covered in blood on their floor.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor,” the 28-year-old says in an emergency call. “I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it. I can’t believe this.”
According to Fox News, Matthew told an operator he had taken more cold medicine than he should have the night before he went to sleep.
Police discovered 29-year-old Lauren with multiple stab wounds. She was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.
Her husband, an aspiring pastor, is being held at Wake County Detention Center without bail and is expected to face court on Tuesday.
The pair had reportedly been married for less than a year.
