The world has taken a sigh of relief knowing that Piers Morgan no longer has a platform to relentlessly bully celebrities, in particular Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
One of the highest earning British morning TV presenter walked off the Good Morning Britain set on-air on March 10, following backlash against his harsh and unfair criticism of Meghan Markle, the claims made against her son’s skin colour and her battle with her mental health.
In a statement released by ITV—the network that runs the morning breakfast show—it was announced that Morgan chose to step down from his role, many suspecting in retaliation to the public outrage aimed his way.
“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” ITV revealed in their statement. “ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
Morgan’s exit comes after Britain’s Office of Communications had no choice but to launch an investigation into his behaviour after they received over 40,000 complaints about the comments he made on the show’s March 8 episode.
“We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules,” regulator Ofcom said in a statement.
Soon after his depature, joy was restored to the world and particularly to Jameela Jamil, who has constantly been on the receiving end of Morgan’s anctics and unfair criticism.
The Good Place actress took to social media to share her own story, detailing how his comments left her mental health damaged and contemplating suicide.
“I almost killed myself a year ago because of Piers Morgan’s relentless campaign of lies and hatred against me last February. I’m glad I’m still alive today for many reasons. But watching him leave GMB today is right up there and has me feeling,” she wrote.
While many believe that perhaps Morgan didn’t quit, but was rather fired by the network for his erratic behaviour, the latter is still unknown. Either way, Morgan’s exit came mere hours after Queen Elizabeth publicly issued a statement over Meghan and Harry’s emotional Oprah interview.
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the palace said in a statement. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members,” it concluded.
