A far cry from the carob buds and sausage rolls we remember from our own school canteen, St Thomas’s Battersea has a dietitian-devised three-week menu cycle, comprised of predominantly organic, seasonal ingredients. “We offer lighter lunches during the lighter days and more substantial meals when the days turn cold,” the catering section of the school’s website read.
As Harper’s Bazaar UK uncovered, Prince George and his peers are treated to a mid-morning snack of organic milk and fresh fruit (banana, satsuma or apple) and freshly baked pain aux raisin.
Lunch begins with the soup of the day and a slice of organic baguette, followed by main course: perhaps authentic lamb ragout with garlic and fresh herbs, or free-range chicken minced chilli con carne served with 50/50 brown and white rice.
Should Prince George be watching his Omega-3 intake, he can choose a fish dish instead: salmon with salsa verde or smoked mackeral on a bed of puy lentils, perhaps.
There are also vegetarian options offered every day, gluten- and dairy-free options and, of course, dessert: from Portugese egg custard tarts with strawberries to steamed jam and coconut sponge with organic custard and oatmeal cookies served with a banana milkshake.
The menu notes that fresh fruit platters and yoghurts are always available as an alternative to the dessert of the day.
With food as good as this, we’d bet Prince George will always be on his very best behaviour.
