As the world breathlessly awaits their engagement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had no qualms about teasing us all with some very public PDAs.

But as they walked hand in hand and cosied up to each other at the Toronto Invictus Games, the loved-up couple were breaking unspoken royal etiquette.

As Prince William and Kate Middleton could have warned them, royals are strongly discouraged from public displays of affection while on duty. It’s obviously fine for Markle (for now…) but as Prince Harry was attending the Games as a representative of the United Kingdom, he was meant to keep his hands to himself.

Why, you may well ask, is such a backward rule still in place? “The likely reasoning is more that while travelling on a tour such as the India trip, technically the couple are working representatives of British monarchy,” royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told People of Kate and Wills. “The couple are likely to show very little PDA, if any, to remain professional during their designated roles abroad.”

Sounds like Prince Harry is in for a royal rap on the knuckles when he heads back home.
