Why Prince William Won’t Be Prince Harry’s Best Man

And Kate won't be Meghan's bridesmaid...

Since the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement, the world has been in royal wedding meltdown mode.

From guessing the exact date to trying to figure out Meghan’s dress designer, the internet has been packed with rumours surrounding the May nuptials.

The latest? That Prince William won’t be his younger brother’s best man.

Thankfully, there’s an easy explanation for this one: there’s actually no such thing as a best man at a royal wedding.

“The best man or best men are officially called supporters,” Marlene Koenig, a British and European royalty expert, told Town & Country.

“William will probably be Harry’s supporter,” she continued. However, it’s possible Harry will break tradition and still appointment William as best man – as William reportedly did when he married Kate Middleton in 2011.

It’s also highly unlikely that the Duchess of Cambridge will be in Meghan’s wedding party, in part due to the fact that she barely knows her future sister-in-law and in part to avoid taking attention away from the bride and groom.

Kate wasn’t even maid of honour at her sister, Pippa’s, wedding. “Kate would upstage her sister,” veteran royals author Judy Wade told People magazine. “If your sister is a future Queen, she is going to upstage the bride and draw attention. Kate would want to be in the background as much as possible,” she continued.

However, it’s highly likely that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be in the wedding party, as page boy and bridesmaid, like they were for Pippa’s wedding. Eep!
