Thanks to the Succession of the Crown Act, which was passed in 2013, Princess Charlotte will retain her position in line to the British throne when the royal baby arrives, even if it’s a boy. She will be the first female royal to do so.

“In determining the succession to the Crown, the gender of the person born after 28 October 2011 does not give that person, or that person’s descendants, precedence over any other person (whenever born)” the Act states.

Prior to this, the British royal family adhered to the 1701 ruling that men always had first right to the throne, overriding any older sisters, Harper’s Bazaar UK reports.

The current line of succession runs as follows: Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Harry. When the royal baby arrives, they’ll slot in between Princess Charlotte and Prince Harry.
