According to The Diana Story documentary, the 12-carat oval ring was actually gifted to Prince Harry following his mother’s tragic 1997 death. Diana’s former staffer Paul Burrell explains in the documentary that William chose to keep his mother’s Cartier watch as a memento, leaving Prince Harry with the engagement ring. When Harry learned his older brother was about to propose to Kate, he told him it would be fitting if she had Diana’s ring.

Express revealed the details from the documentary, which featured Burrell explaining Harry’s generous act. “Harry gave up his precious treasure. The one thing he kept from his mother, he gave to his brother. That’s selfless, kind, and exactly who Diana was,” he said.

That being said, the Duchess of Sussex’s engagement ring from Harry is just as sentimental. The ring features a gold band and three diamond stones, which were taken from Princess Diana’s personal collection. A year after their 2017 engagement, Meghan had redesigned her ring which debuted at Trooping The Colour.

When you look closely at images from Trooping the Colour, you can see that Meghan’s engagement ring band has been changed from a thicker, all-gold band to one that is noticeably thinner and diamond-studded:

Meghan, who loves  Australian jewellery designer Natalie Marie, is a fan of dainty designs, which may have been why she opted to make changes to her ring. It might also be so she can wear her wedding band and eternity ring more comfortably on the same finger.

Of designing the engagement ring, Prince Harry told the BBC, “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s Meghan’s favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelllery collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
