This year marks the fourth time Princess Mary has worn the velvet gown to ring in the New Year, with its debut back in 2007 while pregnant with her second child, Princess Isabella.
The Australian-born royal even styled the dress similarly each time she has worn it, opting for the same glittering tiara as well as her various medals. However, this year she returned to classic jewels after trying out a modern twist: a velvet choker necklace in 2014.

The royals appearance comes just three months after she was named Danish regent by her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe II. Her new role means she can perform duties as head of state when Margrethe is otherwise engaged.
Mary, who is expected to become Queen of Denmark and husband Prince Frederik, met in a Sydney CBD bar during the 2000 Olympics. Prince Frederik recalls immediately knowing that he had met ‘the one’. And as for Mary? She had no idea who he was. The couple officially confirmed their relationship in 2001 and then went on to wed in May 2004.
