Rapper T.I. has sparked controversy online after revealing that he takes his teenage daughter to the gynecologist every year to ensure that her hymen is “still intact” – a procedure wrongly believed to determine whether a woman is a virgin or not.

During a recent appearance on US podcast Ladies Like Us, the father-of-six was asked if he has openly discussed sex with his 18-year-old daughter, Deyjah Harris.

In a response which stunned listeners, he replied: “Yes, not only have we had the conversation – we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen.”

Demonstrating that he was being entirely serious, the 39-year-old went on to reveal that he kickstarted the annual tradition after her 16th birthday.

“Right after her birthday, we celebrate, then usually like the day after the party, she’s enjoying the gifts, I put a sticky note on the door: ‘Tomorrow. 9:30,'” he continued.

T.I. also admitted that he checks the box on her medical form which allows the doctor to share the patient’s personal results with him during the shocking interview.

It’s widely believed that the ‘two finger test’ is an accurate way of determining whether or not someone is a virgin but the procedure bears no scientific evidence.

As per the World Health Organisation, “there is no examination that can prove a girl or woman has had sex – and the appearance of girl’s or woman’s hymen cannot prove whether they have had sexual intercourse, or are sexually active or not”.

In 2018, the United Nations called for an end to the tests describing them as a “medically unnecessary, and often a painful, humiliating and traumatic practice”.

In fact, the hymen can be damaged through a number of natural causes such as sport while some women aren’t born with the body part.

But T.I. isn’t interested in the facts.

“So then they say, ‘I just want you to know there are other ways besides sex that the hymen can be broken like bike riding, athletics, horseback riding, and just other forms of athletic physical activity’,” he revealed.

“So I said, ‘Look, doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bikes, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen, please. And give me back my results expeditiously.”

Responding to the now-viral story on Twitter, gynecologist Jennifer Gunter wrote a thread educating her followers on the hymen – dispelling common myths shrouding the misunderstood body part.

“The hymen is no virginity indicator, 50% of sexually active teens do not have a disrupted hymen,” she tweeted. “The hymen is often very flexible.”

“The hymen means nothing physically and hymen exams are medically not a thing and are unnecessary,” Gunter continued. “And support a disgusting patriarchal trope.”
Planned Parenthood also appeared to respond to the rapper via the social media platform, writing: “Some people think you can tell if someone’s had sex before it their hymen is stretched open. But that’s not the case. Say it with us: You can’t tell is someone’s had sex by the way their hymen looks or feels.”
