Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth have officially filed for divorce after 12 years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason.

According to the divorce papers, which were obtained by TMZ, the couple signed a prenuptial agreement in March 2011, which will “provide adequate and sufficient provisions for their assets and debts”.

The agreement also states that the pair will share custody of their son, Tennessee, 10. They will be required to attend a parenting course, and have 60 days to submit a certificate of completion to the court.

Witherspoon, 47, shared the news to her 29 million Instagram followers on March 24, via a joint statement.

“We have some personal news to share. It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the statement read.

“We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward for everything we have created together. Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.”

Witherspoon married Toth, 52, in a 2011 wedding at her Californian ranch, wearing a custom pink Monique Lhuiller wedding dress.

She gave birth to their son, Tennessee, a year later.

Witherspoon already had two children with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe: Ava, 23, who is the spitting image of her mother, and son Deacon, 19.

In September 2011, the Morning Wars star spoke of her joy to marie claire about meeting Toth, and the stress she experienced as a single parent.

“I got lucky. I did. I got very lucky. He’s so wonderful with the children. I’m very blessed,” she said.

“Somebody close to me once said, ‘Oh, no man will ever accept your children,’” she added. “And I just thought it was the most horrifying thing someone has ever said to me in my entire life. And until I got remarried, I don’t think I realised how stressed I was. I feel so much relief. I don’t think I realised how stressed I was being a single parent. It was really, really stressful. It’s not easy on anybody. It’s really traumatic.”
