When Reese Witherspoon finds a book she likes, she doesn’t just make it her next book club pick—she turns it into a major Hollywood blockbuster.
After adapting the likes of Wild, Gone Girl and Australian author Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, Witherspoon next big project is coming in hot: along with co-producer Lauren Neustadter, Witherspoon has brought Delia Owens’ celebrated novel Where The Crawdads Sing to life.

What Is The Plot Of Where The Crawdads Sing?
Released in 2018, the novel not only topped the New York Times bestsellers list but it also remained Amazon’s most popular fiction book throughout 2019.
Set in mid-20th century South, the New York Times best-seller follows Kya, a young girl in North Carolina who is abandoned by her family and is forced to raise herself in the early ’50s. When her former boyfriend is found dead, Kya suddenly finds herself in the spotlight, and is immediately accused of the murder.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is set to be part coming-of-age story and part murder mystery.
Who Is Cast In Where The Crawdads Sing?
Normal People‘s Daisy Edgar Jones has been cast in the lead role of Kya.
On January 25, Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine confirmed actors Taylor John Smith—who has starred in another book-to-TV series Sharp Objects with Amy Adams in 2018—and Harris Dickinson (Maleficent) are also joining the cast.
Olivia Newman has also signed on to direct the film, with a screenplay adapted by Lucy Alibar. And considering how successful Witherspoon’s past projects have been, including her most recent Little Fires Everywhere, we’ve got high hopes for this being another book-to-screen adaptation done right.
What Is The Release Date For Where The Crawdads Sing?
Perhaps the most exciting news of all, is that we finally have a release date—it’s set for June 24, 2022.
