The Royal Family Have Spoken Out About Coronavirus

“These are uncertain times. And now, more than ever, we need each other” - by Elyssa Kostopoulos
  • 19 Mar 2020

As the world continues to combat the demanding and ever-changing crisis that is COVID-19, the royal family have taken to social media to share messages of hope and support to those affected most.

Both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared posts to their Instagram platforms overnight, to discuss how they’re both respectfully assisting with coronavirus relief efforts during this challenging time.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who have reportedly chosen to self-isolate with baby Archie in their Canada home, were the first to share their message. The couple used their official Instagram account to share a post with a quote card reading “This moment is as true a testament there is to the human spirit.”

“These are uncertain times. And now, more than ever, we need each other. We need each other for truth, for support, and to feel less alone during a time that can honestly feel quite scary,” the caption began.

“There are so many around the world who need support right now, who are working tirelessly to respond to this crisis behind the scenes, on the frontline, or at home,” the post continued. “Our willingness, as a people, to step up in the face of what we are all experiencing with COVID-19 is awe-inspiring. This moment is as true a testament there is to the human spirit.”

These are uncertain times. And now, more than ever, we need each other. We need each other for truth, for support, and to feel less alone during a time that can honestly feel quite scary. There are so many around the world who need support right now, who are working tirelessly to respond to this crisis behind the scenes, on the frontline, or at home. Our willingness, as a people, to step up in the face of what we are all experiencing with COVID-19 is awe-inspiring. This moment is as true a testament there is to the human spirit. We often speak of compassion. All of our lives are in some way affected by this, uniting each of us globally. How we approach each other and our communities with empathy and kindness is indisputably important right now. Over the coming weeks, this will be our guiding principle. We will be sharing information and resources to help all of us navigate the uncertainty: from posting accurate information and facts from trusted experts, to learning about measures we can take to keep ourselves and our families healthy, to working with organisations that can support our mental and emotional well-being. In addition, we will focus on the inspiring stories of how so many of you around the world are connecting in ways big and small to lift all of us up. We are all in this together, and as a global community we can support each other through this process - and build a digital neighbourhood that feels safe for every one of us. We look forward to sharing more over the days and weeks to come...

“Over the coming weeks, this will be our guiding principle.”

The post then explained that the Sussexes will be keeping the public up to date with useful information and resources, while also sharing “inspiring stories” that highlight “how so many of you around the world are connecting in ways big and small to lift all of us up.”

The video that followed shortly after on the @kensingtonroyal account had a much more formal tone, with Prince William addressing the pandemic and reminding followers, "Whenever and wherever adversity strikes, the people of the U.K. have a unique ability to pull together."

Whenever and wherever adversity strikes, the people of the UK have a unique ability to pull together. The way that local communities support those affected shows the very best of our values and human nature. The public's desire to help in the wake of tragedy needs to be managed and channelled in the best possible way - which is why the establishment of the National Emergencies Trust was so important. The NET has launched an appeal to raise funds to help local charities support individuals suffering hardship as a result of the #coronavirus outbreak. "The way that local communities support those affected shows the very best of our values and human nature," he added, with reference to the National Emergencies Trust’s coronavirus appeal efforts.

"The public’s desire to help in the wake of tragedy needs to be managed and channeled in the best possible way — which is why the establishment of the National Emergencies Trust was so important," he said.

Prince William’s video marks the first official statement from the British monarchy and was reposted on the @theroyalfamily‘s Instagram page. Earlier this month while on tour with Kate Middleton, Prince William made a joke in poor taste that the couple had spread the virus.

"I bet everyone’s like, 'I've got coronavirus, I’m dying,' and you’re like, 'No, you’ve just got a cough,'" he said. "It does seem quite dramatic about coronavirus at the moment. Is it being a little bit hyped up, do you think, in the media?"

"By the way, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are spreading coronavirus. Sorry!" William said. "We’re keeping an eye on that, so do tell us if we need to stop."
