The Biggest Runway Trends From Paris Fashion Week

The trends to take note of - by Francesca Wallace

The Biggest Runway Trends From Paris Fashion Week

With Paris fashion week wrapped up for another season, there’s a lot to learn. Whether you’re currently copying every street style look to memory to inspire your winter outfits, or are watching every second of Karl Lagerfeld’s last show for Chanel, there were plenty of inspiring moments and memorable shows to fill your spare time. And, as we’ve done for every city since fashion month began, it’s time to round up the trends. From the unexpected (cinched waists, anyone?) to the welcome (hats!), designers in Paris dressed their models in a whole slew of must-have pieces. Below, we’ve rounded up the exact trends to keep an eye on for the months ahead.

Cummerbund-like belts

They’re thick, they’re sturdy and they’d look right at home underneath a tuxedo. A nod to the ‘80s moment we saw in force over the season, these maximum impact belts were made for cinching waists and creating proportion.

Traditional knits

From Navajo prints to traditional checkers, nods to handmade sweaters and original cultures were found everywhere from Altuzarra to Sacai, who did their own take on the trend through cut-out woollens perfect for an Australian east coast winter.

Hats

Whether they were bucket or wide brimmed, hats reigned both on the streets and the runways this season. Paris had them in spades, thanks mostly to Dior, who presented their own Teddy Girl-esque shapes, which, when paired with Twiggy eyes, were quite the ‘70s throwback.

Floral fevers

Just like Prada did in Milan, designers in Paris went OTT for flowers. From 3D versions to an artist collaboration at Valentino with Jun Takahashi, there were colourful flowers, techno flowers and tiny flowers. In other words, florals were everywhere.

Cool to be smart

It’s hip to be square, right? That’s what designers were telling us in Paris, touting bookish patterns and good girl silhouettes, allowing us to let go of the party girl and go back to the library-loving lady — and we’re on board.

Bookish

Christian Dior, Celine, Loewe

Nipped in waists

No longer obsessed with boxy shapes, Paris saw more and more big names embrace the cinch. Whether it was a gathered pant or a clipped-in skirt, accentuating the waist has never been more on trend.

Christian Dior, Chanel, Saint Laurent

Stomping shoes

Miu Miu gave it to us in khaki and Stella McCartney touted GoGo shades of grey, brown and blue, but the stomping shoe was certainly given a platform (literally) this season, with models literally clomping down the runway in shoes most definitely made for thumping.
