This morning, the world is mourning the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, who has died aged 87.
The Supreme Court confirmed that Ginsburg had passed away on Friday from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer. She died at her home in Washington, surrounded by family.
“Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature,” Chief Justice John Roberts said of her passing. “We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice.”
Throughout the course of her prolific and inspiring career, Ginsburg charted a path for women’s rights and championed several progressive social issues, including same-sex marriage, abortion rights, voting rights and affirmative action.
Lovingly dubbed ‘The Notorious R.B.G.’ for her tenacity and perseverance, Ginsburg was considered an architect of the modern women’s rights movement.
According to NPR, Ginsburg dictated to her granddaughter, Clara Spera: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”
