Sarah Jessica Parker wants you to know that going to the illustrious Met Gala event is definitely not a walk in the park.
The Sex and the City star recently opened up about the careful planning and execution that goes into creating a Met Gala look, including picking out at outfit that’s perfectly on-theme.
Perhaps as a dig at the turnout from recent Met Gala’s, where celebrities have strayed away from that very rule, Parker commented that all she ever thinks about is the theme and the influence.
“Wherever I go to the Met, I don’t understand how everyone else didn’t spend seven to ten months working on it,” she said in the interview with Vogue.
“I’m like, ‘How do you not arrive exhausted by the details of getting it right?’ All these people came together and worked really really hard to put together an extraordinary exhibit.”
Parker added that those who find “beautiful”, yet not on-theme dresses to wear would be a huge relief, but “that is not the assignment. The assignment is the theme”.
“It is an assignment and you should interpret it, and it should be labour intensive, and it should be challenging,” she said.
“Sometimes the theme eludes you, like, you could spend days—and I have had conversations like, ‘What does this theme mean?’ We’ve had some very abstract themes, where you’re like: How do you interpret that?'”
Parker is renowned for her at times extreme approach to Met Gala dressing. From the fully-fledged nativity set she wore on her head for ‘Heavenly Bodies’, to the tartan Alexander McQueen ensemble she wore to ‘AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion’.
Parker has previously said of the latter Met Gala, which she attended alongside McQueen himself in 2006, that it “wasn’t a fun night”.
“Like, it was, but it wasn’t because I was so nervous. I just wanted [McQueen] to be OK.”
She added that her nerves stemmed from a “deep admiration” for the designer.
The designer’s life was tragically cut short in 2010, and Parker said she still has “every pin and scrap of fabric” he touched from each of her of the fittings she attended ahead of the event.
