In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the actress spoke about her latest role in newly-released Marriage Story which sees Johansson star alongside Adam Driver as a couple teetering on the brink of divorce.
Parents to a son named Henry, the estranged duo struggle to keep their marriage afloat with failed counselling, coast-to-coast distance and lawyers pulling them further apart.
The 35-year-old admits that she drew experience from her own life to help garner an understanding of the role, as Johansson touched upon her high-profile romance with Reynolds.

"I mean, the first time I got married I was 23-years-old," Johansson said. "I didn't really have an understanding of marriage."
"Maybe I kind of romanticised it, I think, in a way. It's a different part of my life now. I feel like I'm in a place in my life, I feel I'm able to make more active choices. I'm more present, I think, than I've been before."
Rumours of Johansson and Reynolds' romance first emerged in early 2007 and the couple tied the knot in a private ceremony on Vancouver Island the following year.
Two years later, the A-list duo called it quits.
A statement from the former couple reportedly read: "After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
Following their divorce, Reynolds went on to wed actress Blake Lively with whom he shares three daughters.
Meanwhile, Johansson married French journalist Romain Dauriac and they share a five-year-old daughter, Rose Dorothy, together. The couple divorced in 2016 after two years of marriage.
But the silver screen star will walk down the aisle once more and is now engaged to Saturday Night Live writer Colin Jost.
Sharing her thoughts on marriage, Johansson added: "The idea of building a family, making a family, and having that work, I like that idea."
"I think that would be wonderful. I’ve always wanted that. I wanted that also in my marriage to my daughter’s father as well. It just wasn’t the right person. But I like that idea."
