Following the news that Selena Gomez will be appearing in Woody Allen’s new film A Rainy Day In New York her mother, Mandy Teefey, has admitted she advised Gomez against working with Allen.
Teefey took to Instagram to explain that, despite her best efforts to convince her daughter to walk away from the film, her advice “falls on deaf ears”.
An open letter penned by Allen’s daughter, Dylan Farrow, to the New York Times in 2014 alleged that Allen had molested her when she was just seven years old. As a result of these allegations many actors have admitted their regret in working with the director in the past.
Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Hall appear in A Rainy Day In New York alongside Gomez, however, in light of the Harvey Weinstein allegations and #MeToo movement, they have elected to give their earnings from the film to Time’s Up legal aid fund.
Selena’s lack of response has baffled a lot of her fans given her involvement as a producer for Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, a story in which sexual assault and the effects of sexual assault are heavily stressed.
The singer and actress managed to skirt around the topic in an interview with Billboard last year, saying: “To be honest, I’m not sure how to answer—not because I’m trying to back away from it. [The Harvey Weinstein allegations] actually happened right after I had started [on the movie]. They popped up in the midst of it. And that’s something, yes, I had to face and discuss. I stepped back and thought, ‘Wow, the universe works in interesting ways.'”
