Selena Gomez Is A True Crime Obsessive Turned Detective In New Series ‘Only Murders In The Building’

And she'll be joined by everybody's favourite TV dad, Steve Martin

Selena Gomez first hit our screens as the teenage Alex Russo on Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place, and while she’s gone on to release best-selling albums, appear in multiple Hollywood blockbusters—and even started her own beauty brand, Rare Beauty—the actress is returning to where it all began: the small screen.

The Selena + Chef star has officially signed on to Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building both as an actress and to executive produce the project.

However, Gomez is also no stranger to producing major productions. As well as being one of the executive producers behind Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, Gomez recently produced The Broken Hearts Gallery, a drama likened to Sex And The CityGirls and The Bold Type meshed together.

But of course, this new venture is hardly surprising for Gomez, who has previously spoken out about her love of true-crime, even attending CrimeCon in February to help crack an unsolved mystery.

Whether you’re a true crime obsessive, a fan of Gomez or both, here’s everything you need to know about Only Murders In The Building—from the plot and cast to when you can watch it online.

What Is The Plot Of Only Murders In The Building?

Reportedly a 10-episode series, the series is set to be a masterful blend of true crime and comedy. According to Deadline, the series “follows three strangers who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one.”

During an Instagram Live in February, Gomez also opened up about the tone of the show and what it’s like working with Steve Martin and Martin Short.

“The show is actually really fun,” she revealed. “It’s kind of a dramedy, so there’s moments that are real and then there are other moments that are complete chaos and hilarious. I’m working with Steve Martin and Martin Short and if you don’t know their work, by the way, they’re pretty amazing people to be around.”

As for the entire plot, Short offered fans a full breakdown of the series in an interview with The Daily Beast, back in August 2020.

“It’s about three people who live in one of those upscale apartment buildings in New York. They see each on the elevator, they kind of nod, but they never really speak. They don’t even know each other’s names,” he revealed.

“And then you find out that each one of them goes to their individual apartments and just turns on true crime and obsesses. And then one time they’re in the elevator with this fourth person. And they find out that a fourth person is killed, and they’re determined to solve it. But they make a pact: only murders in the building will they solve. Because they can’t be bothered to go outside.”
