'Selena: The Series' Follows The True Story Behind Her Rise And Tragic Fall At The Hands Of An Obsessed Fan

If you're on the hunt for your next binge-worthy, true story series—post your Queen's Gambit high—then look no further.

While we're used to Netflix producing factual dramas like Ratched, the story of Selena Quintanilla is like nothing they've created before.

And while Jennifer Lopez's iconic 1997 rendition of her life has remained a must-watch, the latest biography on the "undisputed queen of Tejano music", is sure to keep true crime fans captivated.

Introducing Netflix's Selena: The Series.

Based on her real life and death, Netflix's latest project shows how Selena's 'fairy tale life' was not as dreamy as one might think. And while the Tejano singer's rose to success after becoming the first in her genre to win a Grammy Award, it was when her life was tragically cut short in 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar—the founder of her fan club—that the world began to truly appreciate Selena's influence.

From the incredible story to the incredible fashion and star-studded cast, the series is also produced by Selena's older sister, meaning that the story is about as accurate as it gets—and that's all we need to hear to press 'play'.

Piqued your interest? Keep reading for everything you need to know about the series, from the plot to the cast and where you can stream it in Australia.

What Is the Plot of Selena: The Series?

The 20-episode biographical drama centres around one of the most influential Latin artists ever, depicting Selena's rise to stardom before she turned 20, releasing breakthrough studio albums, climbing the charts with hit singles—but tragically dying before her 24th birthday.

Selena: The Series delves into the pop star's struggle with reconciling her Mexican and American identities as she starts to earn acclaim in the music industry. At the same time, she's actively trying to keep her relationship with Chris Pérez—the guitarist who ends up marrying—a secret to keep her father from firing him.

And for true crime fans who remember Selena's fate, the latter part of the series introduces Yolanda Saldívar, the woman who claims to be Selena's biggest devotee and offers to run her fan club for free. And as we know, Yolanda becomes the culprit behind Selena's tragic murder.

Produced by Selena's older sister, Suzette, she stresses that the film isn't a documentary. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: "This series is not the movie [starring Jennifer Lopez], it's more," Suzette wrote. "It's all about our life and the grind to get there when it seemed unattainable."

But don't take our word for it, check out the trailer below to see for yourself.

And the supporting cast is equally excellent, featuring Jesse Posey (Stitchers) as Selena's husband Chris Perez, Natasha Perez (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as her obsessed fan, Yolanda Saldívar, Noemi Gonzalez (The Young and The Restless) as her older sister Suzette Quintanilla to name a few.
