A WA One Nation candidate said that he stands by an article he wrote in 2015 calling single mothers ‘lazy and ugly’.

David Archibald has come under fire for his comments, and was recently asked to confirm whether he still believed what he wrote. He told ABC that he stood by his views, but was not available for interview.

The article was published in Quadrant in March 2015, and accused single mothers of being ‘too lazy’ to attract and maintain a partner. Mr Archibald suggested that single motherhood was a ‘lifestyle choice that could be defunded’.

“The first that springs to mind is single motherhood,” Mr Archibald wrote.

“These are women too lazy to attract and hold a mate, undoing the work of possibly 3 million years of evolutionary pressure.

“This will result in a rapid rise in the portion of the population that is lazy and ugly.

“We know what causes pregnancy these days, so everyone who gets pregnant outside of marriage is a volunteer. This is an easy one for defunding.”

These comments are almost brave in their stupidity, attacking one of the most vulnerable and vocal demographics in Australia with little validity to his arguments.

Senior Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese, who was raised by a single mother, has slammed Mr Archibald’s comments, calling for him to be fired.

“The idea that if you have a single mother then somehow you’re less of a human being really belongs way back in the dark ages and I find it incredibly offensive,” Mr Albanese said.

Pauline Hanson tweeted her response to calls for Mr Archibald to be fired with a single, fiery tweet.
