All Your Burning ‘Snowpiercer’ Season 2 Questions, Answered

Like, is Melanie actually dead?

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Snowpiercer season two.

We should have known Netflix’s Snowpiercer wouldn’t leave us with all the answers, and season two was no different thanks to the burning cliffhangers left in its wake (which, of course, has us eagerly awaiting season three).

As a refresher, Snowpiercer is set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, with the series focusing on the remaining people who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually-moving train, the Snowpiercer, that circles the globe. The series is based on the graphic climate fiction novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette, and is a continuation of the film adaptation which starred Chris Evans

If you’re as hooked as we are, fret not—the Netflix series has already been renewed for a season three, which is currently in production, so we’ll (hopefully) get some resolutions to the show’s many unanswered questions soon.

Read on for our investigation into the many questions Snowpiercer’s season two ended with, and how we think they’ll resolve them in season three.

Is Melanie Cavill Really Dead, And What Does That Mean For Snowpiercer

In season two we see Melanie Cavill (played by Jennifer Connelly) get separated from the rest of the train, and get a glimpse of her journey later on—but when Alex (Rowan Blanchard), her daughter, and Layton (Daveed Diggs) make their way to her research centre they find her note, and assume she’s dead, along with her data, which confirms that the Earth is warming up.

Fans were quick to ask if Melanie was, in fact, dead. Following the emotional finale, producer Becky Clements spoke with Deadline about Melanie’s fate, saying, “We are pleased that Melanie will join us for Season 3,” so we can breathe easy knowing Connelly will return next season.

Although, we still don’t know in what capacity she’ll return.

Will Passengers Finally Get Off The Snowpiercer Train?

With Melanie’s revelation that the Earth was in fact warming, and with Layton and Alex retrieving exactly where the warm spots of the planet are, many fans guessed that meant passengers could finally disembark the Snowpiercer. Only, we know Mr Wilford (Sean Bean) won’t allow this—and it looks like we’ll have to wait and see a battle for “New Eaden”, as Layton calls the future outside Snowpiercer, come to fruition.

Are Javi And Boki Really Dead?

Not afraid to kill off major characters, Snowpiercer fans were shocked when two other key players were left with unanswered endings—Javier de la Torre (played by Roberto Urbina) and Bojan “Boki” Boscovic (played by Aleks Paunovic). Engineer Javi was mauled by Mr Wilford’s pitbull Jupiter for helping Layton and Ruth, while Boki, the last living Breachman, decided to “make coup” and was last seen being attacked by Jackboots.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until season three to know what fate Javi and Boki were met with.

Is Ruth In Danger?

After being hired by Mr Wilford, Ruth switches sides after learning the true evilness of the dictator and decides her loyalty belongs to the train and its inhabitants. After deciding to become loyal to Layton, Ruth misses her chance to leave on the pirate ship and is left to face Mr Wilford after her betrayal—and if Mr Wilford’s past torturous actions are anything to go by, we expect it won’t be an easy journey for Ruth come season three.

What Will Snowpiercer Season Three Be About?

Now that we’ve done a deep dive into the questions we want to be answered in Snowpiercer season three, we’re dying to know where the storyline will take Mr Wilford, Layton, and the 1,034-cars-long super train.

As we know, season two concluded with the cliffhanger of Layton leading a group of rebels off Snowpiercer onto a rebel train, setting off for the Rocky Mountains to rescue Melanie (who they assume escaped to take refuge on parts of the Earth that are warming). Mr Wilford will likely make a plan of attack to stop the pirate train—and it remains to be seen if the villainous character will succeed.
